Traditional Braces

Metal braces
Metal braces are the most common orthodontic appliance. Metal brackets are used with wires to straighten teeth.
Tooth colored braces
Ceramic brackets are tooth colored, can be used in place of metal brackets, and are less noticeable. A metal wire is still used, but it is very thin and can be very esthetic.
How old should you be for braces?
Evaluation for braces is best done at about age 7. Several conditions such as severe over or under bite are easier to correct when we can guide the growth of the jaw at a young age to help fix these “bite” problems. The same severe over or under bite often require surgery to correct if growth and development is completed prior to starting braces.
There are a number of minor orthodontics problems that can be fixed at any time. Most children start braces when the majority of the adult teeth are erupted at about age 12.
Am I too old for braces?
It is a myth that anyone is too old for braces.
How long do I have to wear braces?
The amount of time required for braces depends on the orthodontic problem. A typical treatment time usually falls between 1 and 3 years.
